the art of down time

George and I had the good fortune to see my family for a week on the coast of Maine.  Owl's Head to be exact.  It was a once a year opportunity to spend quality time with my family, unplugged from the internet and daily distractions that can take us away from what's really important.  I did my best to stay away from my smartphone, except for the occasional Instagram photo.  It was a challenge and an opportunity to slow down and be in the present moment.  The last time I saw my 11-year old nephew was at Thanksgiving and he's growing like a bean sprout!

The cottage is lovely and sits on the edge of the rocky coast.  We sat on the glassed-in front porch overlooking the ocean and listened to the sound of the sea's crashing waves.  We had three good days upon first arrival.  The most I've seen the sun in ages!  During the middle of the week, the rain and fog, forced us indoors to play games, read and create.  My mother brought her beading and jewelry kit with her and she showed me how to make my own earrings.  I started with one pair and was hooked.  I got the creative bug to keep making more as gifts for friends.  My mother and I love to collect sea glass and stones.  She made some lovely sea glass pendants and beaded earrings.  One pair of earrings has already been gifted to George's cousin, Sarah for hosting us in Portsmouth, New Hampshire for a night.

How do you like to spend your time on vacation?  I already miss the sound of the ocean waves lulling me to sleep.

  1. Beautiful jewelry! And, of course, great photos.

I like to play with watercolors on vacation...and I'm spending the summer learning more about them. xxx

    1. Thank you Beverly! I'd love to see your watercolor paintings. I'm sure they will be breathtaking. Have fun playing and enjoying your summer. Teachers need a break. Just listened to "Teacher Man" by Frank McCourt on our drive to/from Maine. It was excellent! Gives me an even greater understanding and compassion for our teachers. Thank you!
